A Heart for Rescue
The Maryland Chapter of the House Rabbit Society was created to bring the House Rabbit Society’s mission of rabbit rescue, education, and advocacy to our local community. While our chapter grew from the work and philosophy of the national House Rabbit Society, our day-to-day work is rooted here in Maryland, responding to the needs of local rabbits, their families, and community shelters.
Since our chapter’s beginning in 1997, volunteers have worked to improve the lives of domestic rabbits through hands-on rescue, foster care, education, and community outreach. Our goal is not only to help individual rabbits in need, but also to change the way rabbits are understood and cared for.
Rabbits are social, intelligent, active animals who require appropriate housing, enrichment, companionship, veterinary care, and a commitment that extends throughout their lives. Yet rabbits remain among the most exploited and misunderstood companion animals. Many are bred and slaughtered or used in laboratories, while those kept as pets may spend their lives alone in small hutches, deprived of exercise, proper nutrition, medical care, and love. Others are abandoned in parks, forests, and along roadsides, while countless rabbits are ultimately euthanized in animal shelters.
Our work exists to change this reality by promoting compassionate, informed, and responsible care for rabbits.
Home Starts Here
Our rescue takes in rabbits from local shelters that are at risk of euthanasia or need more specialized care than the shelter can provide. Once in the House, each rabbit is placed in a foster home where they can receive the individualized care and attention they need.
Our success depends on the dedicated volunteers who open their homes to rabbits who would otherwise remain isolated in a shelter until their time expires. Foster families provide a safe, supportive environment where rabbits can recover from past challenges, build trust and confidence, learn to socialize, and prepare for adoption. By giving these rabbits time, care, and stability, our foster volunteers help give abandoned and surrendered rabbits a second chance at a better life.
Sowing Knowledge, Growing Hope
Education is an equally important part of our mission. Many rabbits enter shelters because their families were not prepared for their needs. Our volunteers answer questions and connect people with accessible, reliable information about rabbit care, behavior, and health.
Through public events, educational outreach, and online content, we share practical resources and connect current and prospective rabbit guardians with information and support. In doing so, we hope to help people make responsible, informed decisions about rabbit care and adoption. Every interaction contributes to a more knowledgeable and compassionate community for rabbits.
